  1. Sanskrit began as the sacred language of the Hindus. It came into being 
  2. around 400 B.C. when an Indian grammarian named Panini developed 
  3. a set of rules for the language. Sanskrit uses the Devanagari alphabet 
  4. which combines alphabetic and syllabic principles.
